Reading vs Sheff Wed Match Preview
Reading finished 20th last season in the Championship just two places and seven points from being relegated to League One. Jose Gomez did a decent job last season to keep them up and has a full summer now to implement his ideas. Bookmakers think they will struggle this campaign and have them fifth favourites for the drop.
At the Madejski, the Royals struggled winning just eight of their 23 matches and producing the fourth-worst home record in the division. The 31 goals that they conceded at their own place gave them the joint-sixth worst defensive record.
Sheff Wed finished 12th last season ending the campaign ten points removed from the play-offs and they will look to bridge that gap this season. Lee Bullen is in caretaker charge as the Yorkshire side have yet to replace Steve Bruce who left to join Newcastle. They have been quiet in the transfer market and the worry is they could go backwards in this campaign.
Away from Hillsborough, the Owls won just six times last season but eight draws meant they had the 11th best away record in the division. 56% of the goals that they conceded in the league last season came on their travels.
Bookmakers are struggling to separate the pair here with Reading marginal favourites with most because of their home advantage. Neither team has had a wonderful summer and both could be set for seasons of struggle and a draw might be the way to go here. Jose Gomes has had longer to work with his team but Lee Bullen showed in his spell as the caretaker boss that he can get the team organized and playing for him. Given that neither side have a wealth of attacking options then perhaps taking the match to finish al-square and under 2.5 goals in the fixture also makes sense.
