Augsburg beat Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund last weekend and the boost that will have given them could spur them on to another good result against RB Leipzig.

The Bavarian club, who are the closest geographically in the German top flight to champions Bayern Munich, are battling to avoid relegation this season after eight years among the elite.

The play-off against a second-tier side is the most immediate threat to Augsburg, but they countered VfB Stuttgart’s win against Hannover last time out with a 2-1 victory over Dortmund thanks to a double scored by former Sunderland striker Dong-won Ji.

Manuel Baum’s side had also run Bayern close a couple of weeks earlier, losing only 3-2, so they are clearly not daunted at present by taking on the big guns.

RB Leipzig are third in the table and unbeaten in their last seven games, but a return of only two goals scored within their latest four home matches does not make us want to rush to back Ralf Rangnick’s side at long odds-on here.

Backing Augsburg to avoid defeat is certainly something of a speculative bet because their away form is pretty ordinary, but they may just be capable of more heroics after getting the better of Dortmund – and especially with their Bundesliga future being far from secure.
