Inter Milan will hope being drawn against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League’s first knockout round is a good omen – even though they have a poor record in Austria.

You have to go back 28 seasons to find the only previous time these clubs met competitively and on that occasion, Inter turned around a first-leg deficit to win the tie at home and went on to lift the UEFA Cup by beating Roma in the final.

But the Nerazzurri have lost on five of their seven visits to Austria and may not find it easy on this latest trip to the Alpine country.

Rapid Vienna are having a poor domestic campaign but they were rock-solid at home in the Europa League group stage, keeping three clean sheets out of three and finishing with a 1-0 victory over Rangers that meant they qualified instead of the Scottish club.

And it’s not as though Inter have been free-scoring lately – their winner against Parma on Saturday was the only goal they have bagged within 90 minutes in their last five games.

Keeping things tight, with the hope of nicking an away goal in San Siro, is probably Rapid’s best chance in this tie and we will back them to avoid defeat on their own pitch.
