Rangers vs St Joseph’s Predictions
Rangers managed to avoid the embarrassment that their Old Firm rivals suffered in Gibraltar two years previously as they headed to the British overseas territory last weekend. Despite being held to a goalless draw in the first half, the Teddy Bears raced away from their opponents in the second half with goals from Ryan Jack, Sheyi Ojo, Connor Goldson and Alfredo Morales securing a comfortable 0-4 away win.
The Europa League provided some of the more memorable moments for the Gers during their first season under the guidance of Steven Gerrard. The Glaswegian outfit remained unbeaten in their eight home fixtures in the competition last term and they were desperately unlucky to not qualify from the group stages. This year, they’ll be hoping for more success on the continent as they also look to push on and challenge Celtic domestically.
Preparation has been excellent so far, with thumping friendly victories over both Oxford United and Olympique de Marseille either side of that first leg in Gibraltar. There are some intriguing new arrivals such as Steven Davis, Joe Aribo and Filip Helander into the squad and they’ll look to impress the Ibrox faithful in their side’s first competitive home game of the season here and a win should be a formality at odds of 66/1 with Coral.
Football in Gibraltar has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years. After receiving FIFA member status, the national team have started to compete and even managed a handful of points in the UEFA Nations League last term. Domestically, the game remains amateur, hence why those that qualify for continental competitions rarely manage to make it beyond the first round or two of qualifying.
St Joseph’s have qualified for the Europa League qualifying section in the last three seasons. In the first year, they were beaten by Cypriot outfit AEL Limassol 10-0 on aggregate and last year they lost on penalties to B36 Torshavn in the preliminary round. This year, they did beat Prishtina in the preliminary round but now find themselves needing nothing short of a football miracle to even with this second leg at 66/1 with Coral, never mind to actually qualify.
We’re anticipating another comfortable win for Rangers here against their amateur opponents. St Joseph’s were well organised in that first leg, but they don’t have the capability to prevent this Gers side from running riot in front of goal, even if Steven Gerrard decides to rest some players with the tie already all but sewn-up. It should be a matter of how many for the home side on Thursday – we’re backing them to win by more than four at odds of 13/8 with PaddyPower.
