Rangers vs Celtic Match Preview
Steven Gerrard has a 100% record against Celtic at Ibrox as Rangers manager, but the value could be with the Scottish champions in the season’s first Old Firm clash on Sunday.
A perfect illustration of how Gerrard has improved the Gers came in last term’s results at home to their bitter rivals – the Light Blues had previously lost four in a row on their own pitch but they triumphed 1-0 and 2-0 as all four of the season’s meetings ended in home wins.
Rangers still finished nine points behind Celtic in the Premiership table, but the signs this time around are that they will get much closer – and possibly even dethrone the Hoops for the first time since they last captured the title themselves in 2011 before their financial troubles.
Both clubs have made 100% starts in their four domestic matches so far, while they will also each contest the Europa League group stage with Celtic given the chance to avenge their Champions League exit against Romanian club CFR Cluj.
Although Rangers are unbeaten this season, they now face a Celtic side who have scored 15 goals in five away games since returning to action on July 9 and for all the progress Gerrard’s side have made, it should not be forgotten their arch-foes have won the last nine trophies available to them in Scotland.
Celtic’s current form is fine too, especially from a goalscoring point of view, and they look a shade overpriced to inflict Gerrard’s first Old Firm defeat at Ibrox.
