QPR vs Watford Match Preview
Watford, along with Wolves, will be eyeing the FA Cup as one route towards European football next season – but they could be in for a difficult fifth-round tie against QPR.
As things stand, it looks as though either Watford or Wolves are set to qualify for the 2019-20 Europa League. They could do so by winning the FA Cup or finishing seventh in the Premier League if one of the two Manchester clubs or Chelsea triumphs at Wembley instead.
The latter scenario is the more likely, but Watford reached the FA Cup semi-finals only three years ago and will fancy their chances of going at least that far again in such an open year.
However, it may not be easy against QPR who have progressed twice at home in this competition against Leeds and Portsmouth, the latter in a replay.
Steve McClaren’s side have been showing recently that they have plenty of goals in them and big striker Matt Smith, who performed FA Cup heroics for Oldham in the past against Liverpool and Everton, is in particularly good form just now.
Watford have lost only one of their last nine games and that was a narrow defeat against Tottenham, but in an FA Cup campaign full of upsets they could be worth opposing at odds-on to advance in 90 minutes here – extra time would be required if the scores are level as fifth-round replays have been abolished for the first time.
