Although Paris Saint Germain are still widely expected to win this season’s Ligue 1 title, they suffered an embarrassing 2-1 away defeat to Rennes last Sunday. Despite going ahead first thanks to a goal from the irrepressible Edinson Cavani, Thomas Tuchel’s team looked lacklustre and suffered their first defeat of the season.

The result will have sent the alarm bells ringing at Parc des Princes after a summer that was spent trying to deflect attention away from the future of the wayward Neymar. The Brazilian striker was once again absent in the game against Rennes, and with ongoing rumours that he is set to return to Barcelona, it seems that all is not well at PSG.

This is especially so as Neymar was triumphant against Toulouse in his opening home match for PSG. With two goals, two assists and a penalty in his debut home game in August 2017, it looked like Neymar was making good on his staggering £200 million fee.

But things move quickly in football and the Brazilian forward rapidly fell out of favour towards the end of last season. Thankfully, PSG have plenty of quality in their ranks with the likes of Kylian Mbappe always looking hungry for goals. The French international hasn’t scored a Ligue 1 goal yet this season, so look out for value bets like the odds of 5/2 for Mbappe to be first goalscorer at William Hill.

Above all, PSG are a well-rounded side and a class apart from the likes of Toulouse who struggled to stay above the relegation zone in last season’s Ligue 1. In addition to this, Thomas Tuchel has boosted his team’s defence through shrewd purchases such as Abdou Diallo and Idrissa Gueye. As a result, it could be worth betting on PSG to win by two goals or more with odds of 16/5 at Betway.

Despite PSG’s undeniable skill, their early defeat against Rennes has shown that Thomas Tuchel’s team aren’t invincible. The so-called ‘beautiful mess’ of PSG was also witnessed at the end of their 2018/19 campaign where they lost three of their last seven Ligue 1 matches.
