Portsmouth vs Southampton Match Preview
Two fierce rivals who meet infrequently go head-to-head for a place in the Carabao Cup fourth round with Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett desperately in need of a boost.
This south coast rivalry remains as strong as any in the UK’s big cities even though the clubs have met just three times in the last 14 years and on only 38 occasions ever, which is why it has been selected for live TV coverage ahead of some other tasty Tuesday ties.
Portsmouth, after suffering financial turmoil a decade ago that led to them dropping three league divisions, have been fighting their way back up, but they are failing so far to justify their billing of being among the League One pre-season promotion favourites.
With only a solitary win in their first seven games, Pompey have only three teams behind them in the table including Bolton who had a 12-point deduction, so some of their fans have turned on manager Jackett even though he took them to the play-offs and a Checkatrade Trophy triumph last term.
However, Portsmouth’s cup form continues to be very good – they have won 3-0 at home and 2-0 away to Championship clubs Birmingham and QPR respectively in this competition and also have a 100% record so far in their defence of the EFL Trophy.
This is the sort of tie in which the form book can go out of the window and with Southampton having been beaten 3-1 at home in the Premier League by Bournemouth on Friday, they could be worth opposing at odds-on amid a hostile Fratton Park atmosphere.
