Portsmouth vs Scunthorpe Match Preview
Portsmouth are looking to win promotion back into the Championship this season as they continue their ascent back up the Football League. Having reached the heights of the top half of the Premier League and even an FA Cup win in 2008, the Hampshire-based outfit have been through the mill in recent years, sinking to depths of League Two but slowly but surely they appear to be building themselves back up and aiming to progress back to the top table.
After a year of finding their feet at this level under Kenny Jackett, promotion was clearly the aim for Pompey this season and although they have been in the race for the majority of the campaign, a recent run of eight league games without a win saw them slip out of the automatic spots and into the play-offs. Two wins in their last three have boosted confidence somewhat, can they now pick up another three points on Saturday at 3/5 with BetVictor.
Scunthorpe United managed to reach the play-offs in League One last season before being beaten by eventual winners Rotherham United over two legs in the semi-finals. A club that do not afford their managers much time to turn things around, Graham Alexander was dismissed in the March of last season and his replacement Nicky Daws didn’t manage to make it beyond August this season before being replaced by Stuart McCall.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the amount of upheaval at Glanford Park this season, the side have struggled for consistency in the league and as a result they find themselves in a disappointing 15th place in the table and with the bottom half of the table being as tight as it is, the Iron are not yet clear of the relegation battle that is developing at the bottom of the table. You can back them to pick up a huge three points in this fixture at odds of 5/1 with William Hill.
The hosts should pick up three points here. Their confidence seems to be back following morale-boosting wins over Walsall and Bradford City and with the home advantage, they should be too strong for a bottom-half Scunthorpe outfit that have managed just one win in their last five league fixture. Pompey have kept just one clean sheet in their last ten games though, whilst the Iron smashed in four goals in their last outing against Southend. The home win and both teams to score bet is priced at odds of 27/10 with BetVictor.
Bret Pitman returned to the scoresheet in midweek with a goal in Portsmouth’s 2-3 win over Walsall. The former Bournemouth man managed to rack up over 20 league goals last season and although he hasn’t been quite as prolific this time around, the experienced 31 year old has the edge over most defences in this league and we fancy him to add another to his six goal tally here at odds of 13/8 with PaddyPower.
