Portsmouth have seen a disappointing run since mid-September and feel far from their last term’s performances, with just six points to their name after seven outings and a huge 15-point gap to pace-setters Ipswich (with two games in hand). They now host Bolton for their Matchday 11 clash in hope they can pick it up and it feels the visitors are a great opportunity to do so.
Pompey saw a thriller 2-2 draw against Burton Albion but struggled to build on their fine goalscoring performances, with a 1-0 loss at Wycombe and a 0-4 home loss to Southampton in League Cup since. Kenny Jackett will now hope he can find a cure for their woes and we feel they will feel more versatile going forward on the day.
Bolton have finally started earning points and we’ve seen them share the spoils with both Oxford (0-0) and Sunderland (1-19 in their last two outings, proving themselves a tougher nut to crack in front of the home fans once again. They have seen a much more disappointing run on the road, though, and this will be worrying.
Wanderers have seen nothing but losses on the road and conceded a high total of 21 goals on their last four trips, which will be far from boosting their confidence – despite scoring three along the way too. While it’s still early to talk about it, they will obviously need away points to avoid relegation but we don’t see them snatching any now.
We will thus back Portsmouth to an exciting win on the day and we’ll go for a Home win and Over 2.5 Goals FT, which combines to an enticing 10/11 with Paddy Power and looks a great approach to the fixture at this point.
