Portsmouth vs Barnsley Match Preview
Two clubs whose league campaigns are likely to be of much greater importance than the FA Cup meet at Fratton Park – and Barnsley may just be the value bet to reach the fifth round.
Portsmouth missed out last season in joining Barnsley by being promoted from League One. They lost in the play-offs and going up automatically this time around will have been the top priority, but there were calls for manager Kenny Jackett’s head earlier this term after his side made a disappointing start.
However, Pompey have really got their act together since Bonfire Night. They have won 13 of their last 17 games in all competitions, are six points off the top of the table and looking good to successfully defend the Leasing.com Trophy.
Barnsley, meanwhile, are battling to stay in the Championship. They have improved significantly since Gerhard Struber replaced Daniel Stendel as manager, going 18 matches without a win before the Austrian started to make an impact and he has engineered five victories since the last day of November.
Struber has lured a couple of players from his former club, Europa League group-stage participants Wolfsberger, this month and will hope they can help to close the four-point gap between the Tykes and the Championship safety zone.
Despite a couple of defeats in the past week, Barnsley have not been showing relegation form over the last two months since Struber got his feet under the table and they may just be good enough to beat a Portsmouth side that could consider Tuesday’s trip to Lincoln as a more urgent assignment considering their promotion quest.
