Porto vs Sporting Lisbon Match Preview
Porto are counting on a huge upset at Benfica if they are to retain the Portuguese league title – yet they are no certainties to also gain the win they need themselves.
Last season, for the first time in five years, Porto lifted the Primeira Liga trophy. But they are set to hand it straight back to Benfica, who only need to draw their final game at home to Santa Clara because they have a two-point lead and a better head-to-head record.
The key result was Benfica’s 2-1 success away to Porto in early March which put them top of the table and both teams have taken 28 points from a possible 30 since then.
However, the fixtures program has given Porto a tough concluding match against Sporting who, of course, complete the dominant Portuguese triumvirate albeit they have not won the title since 2002 – and they are eight points adrift in third position this time.
Sporting are ending the campaign in terrific form, though, with nine straight victories before last weekend’s disappointing draw – albeit with 10 men from the 37th minute – at home to a Tondela side who had much more to play for as they are battling against relegation.
Having won their last away match 8-1, Sporting should be confident travelling to Porto and after lifting the League Cup this season on penalties against the seemingly outgoing champions – they equalised in the 92nd minute – they could cause them more anguish here.
