Portland Timbers vs LA Galaxy Predictions
Portland Timbers reached the final of the MLS Cup last season despite finishing fifth in the Western Conference and in the three years preceding that run to the final they have not only previously won the tournament, back in 2015, but then failed to qualify for the play-offs the following campaign. It’s hard to tell what kind of season the Timbers will have each year and this year has been as unpredictable as ever.
Despite a pretty dreadful start to the season and despite the fact that they are currently languishing down in ninth place in the conference table with 20 games on the board, Giovanni Savarese’s side have really started to pick up in the last few weeks and they come into this game on the back of a six game unbeaten run in all competitions. Can they extend that run to seven games with three points here at 4/7 with William Hill?
LA Galaxy are flying high towards the top of a tightly-contested Western Conference at the moment as they currently occupy second place with cross-town rivals LAFC the only team above them in the rankings. This is hardly surprising as the Galaxy are always expected to be among the frontrunners in Major League Soccer, having lifted the MLS Cup on five previous occasions and always being able to attract high profile players across from Europe.
Although they still sit in second place, the Californian outfit have struggled for consistency recently, losing home and away fixtures to Cali Clasico rivals San Jose Earthquakes and needing penalties to overcome Tijuana in the Leagues Cup across their last three matches. Away from home they may struggle against a resurgent Timbers outfit here, hence odds of 19/4 on the away win with Bet365.
We’re backing the hosts to win out in this game as we often do in Major League Soccer, where home advantage appears to count for more than it does in other leagues and the Timbers are in fine fettle at the moment on the back of that six game unbeaten run in all competitions. The Galaxy have plenty of attacking options in their squad though, not least in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and they haven’t failed to score in any of their last four games. The home win and both teams to score tip is available at 7/4 with Coral.
Brian Fernandez has been a revelation in front of goal for the Timbers so far this season. The Argentinian forward scored a brace in the win over rivals Seattle Sounders last week to take his tally to eight goals from just nine Major League Soccer appearances since his off-season move from Mexican outfit Necaxa. We’re backing him to get on the scoresheet again in this one at odds of 4/5 with William Hill.
