Walsall enjoyed an excellent 3-0 win at Gillingham on Saturday which may well have given them the boost they need to end Plymouth’s three-match victory sequence.

The Saddlers had been on a lean run of form before their weekend triumph in which striker Andy Cook took his goals tally for the season to 15 with a hat-trick in the first 47 minutes.

It meant Walsall remain five points ahead of Plymouth in the League One table, even though Tuesday’s hosts are on a strong run at present as they try to escape the relegation zone.

Argyle had been having a poor campaign, but it has taken a real turn for the better since the very first day of 2019 with successive wins against Oxford, Southend and Coventry.

Manager Derek Adams will be hoping the upturn marks a repeat of last term when the Pilgrims improved dramatically from January onwards and only finished one place outside the play-offs when losing their last two matches cost them dearly.

This is a rearranged fixture from FA Cup third-round weekend when Walsall were in action away to Championship club Bolton and led at the break before succumbing in the second half.
