Portsmouth need to quickly end their current poor spell if they are to gain automatic promotion this season, starting by getting back on track with a victory at Plymouth.
For most of the campaign, Pompey have looked the best team in League One. But over the last month their results have dipped and a Checkatrade Trophy quarter-final win was the only triumph in their latest seven games.
Consequently, Kenny Jackett’s side have dropped out of the two automatic promotion positions, they also have Sunderland breathing down their neck with games in hand and exited the FA Cup away to QPR on Tuesday.
Therefore, it is starting to get critical for Portsmouth and no more slip-ups can be afforded if they are to stay in the hunt with Luton and Barnsley above them.
Plymouth, meanwhile, are repeating what they did last season, i.e. improving dramatically in the second half of the campaign.
But this time they have left it too late to have a crack at the play-offs – they just missed out last term – and instead merely staying up in a hugely competitive relegation battle will be the main priority for the Pilgrims.
Derek Adams’ side have won five of their last six matches, but Portsmouth are significantly higher in the table than any of those opponents and we will trust the visitors to put their recent struggles behind them.
