Marseille are making a strong challenge for a return to the Champions League next season, but their progress is likely to be halted by a defeat away to all-conquering PSG.

L’OM suffered a terrible campaign in the Europa League this term, collecting only one point in their group, yet they have hit a strong run of form in Ligue 1 and are threatening Lyon for third position which would yield Champions League football.

The key to the resurgence has been the goals of Mario Balotelli, who only made his debut in late January after joining from Nice but has scored in five of his seven appearances so far.

However, the mercurial Italian will have his work cut out to make the difference at the Parc des Princes, where Paris Saint-Germain have a 100% record in the league this season and the reigning champions entered the weekend 17 points clear at the top of the table.

They will have to settle for a maximum of two of the four major trophies they were targeting this season, but at least PSG declared this week that they and manager Thomas Tuchel are happy to keep working together for the 2019-20 campaign.

PSG do not concede many goals at home (see stats above) but Marseille look capable of breaching their defence and there could be a consolation for the visitors in the defeat we are fully expecting.
