Oxford vs Portsmouth Match Preview
Oxford host Portsmouth for their EFL Trophy clash on the back of a six-match unbeaten streak across competitions, where they prove themselves a very tough nut to crack in front of the home fans time and time again. They now hope to keep it up and build on their top 2 spot in Southern Group B, promising a lot at the Kassam Stadium once more.
The U’s have seen a thriller 2-2 draw at Accrington Stanley on Saturday, where they took the lead twice but it still wasn’t enough for the fourth win in a row. Still, they get a lot to build on after beating Norwich U21 (2-1), Tranmere (3-0), West Ham (4-0), and Gillingham (3-0) in their last four home outings and we feel Karl Robinson’s men will be very motivated to impress.
Portsmouth will hardly feel like sitting ducks and they come into the match on the back of a winning streak of their own, where they bagged rather narrow wins over Bolton (1-0) and Doncaster (1-2) over the past two weeks. They finally put an end to a winless streak beforehand and Kenny Jackett will be desperate to build on such consistency.
Pompey hardly have much of stability when away from home, though, and the last-gasp winner from Ellis Harrison at the Keepmoat only secured their second win in six trips across competitions. They will now need more and we don’t really feel they’re up to the task this time around.
We will thus stick our necks out for Oxford to challenge the top of Southern Group B table here, going for them to bag all three points at 27/20 with Coral. We’ve seen them rock-solid here lately and we now hope to see more of the same on Tuesday.
We should be in for goals and we feel Portsmouth will be happy with their rediscovered goalscoring form, despite very narrow occasions behind them. With that in mind, we’re now also going for a Yes on Both teams to score, which comes off as more of a banker bet at 4/6 with William Hill.
