Oxford vs Charlton Match Preview
Oxford United have been midtable fodder in Karl Robinson’s first full season as manager at the club. The Liverpudlian moved to the Kassam Stadium just over one year ago and although they may have struggled for form at times earlier in the campaign, his side have started to show their quality in the last few weeks, pulling away from the crazy relegation battle that involves almost every team in the bottom half of the League One table.
That upturn in form has seen the U’s go six games without tasting defeat and although a late run for the play-offs is now impossible, they will at least be hoping to end the season on a positive note so that they can take some momentum into the next campaign. Having been held by one of those struggling sides, AFC Wimbledon, in their last home game, can they pick up three points this time around at 19/10 with bet365.
Charlton Athletic have looked like play-off contenders for the majority of the campaign but their remarkable form in the last few weeks couple with some disappointing results for the likes of Sunderland and Barnsley may have opened up the door to a late automatic promotion push. As things stand, the Addicks continue to occupy fifth place but there are now just three points separating them from the Tykes in second, with four games remaining.
In former player Lee Bowyer, Charlton have a manager that their fans can get behind and the players appear to have bought into the ex-midfielders philosophies this season and even more so in recent weeks. The Londoners make the short trip to Oxfordshire this weekend on the back of an eleven game unbeaten streak and a four game winning streak, looking to put the pressure on the top two with another win here at 31/20 with William Hill.
We think the visitors should have enough in the tank to do so here, particularly as the motivation of an automatic promotion push will be behind them going into this final handful of games in the regular season. Oxford may be playing better of late, but they’ve nothing to play for in these games and the Addicks have been relentless in their pursuit of points of late. It’ll be a tough ask, but we fancy the visitors to win by a single goal here at bet365.
Lyle Taylor has proven to be a terrific signing for Charlton since joining from AFC Wimbledon last summer. The 29 year old has led the scoring charts for his side all season, racking up 18 goals in League One this season including a brace in last weekend’s victory against league leaders Luton. You can back him to get another in this game at very reasonable odds of 9/5 with PaddyPower.
