Oxford United vs Manchester City Match Preview
Manchester City visit Oxford in the Carabao Cup for the second season running – and this time, their League One hosts are in much better form.
This season’s surprise packages in the League Cup are Oxford and Colchester, mixing it in the quarter-finals with six top-flight clubs, and Karl Robinson’s side are hoping to fare better than in September 2018 when City eased to victory at the Kassam Stadium with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez.
At that time, the Us were in the midst of a poor run of results, but this term they have been on a great run since mid-September (see stats above) and are certainly contending for promotion from their division.
The most impressive aspect about Oxford is their defending and in their last 12 matches, they have conceded a total of only five goals – which is all the more creditable when you think they played a sequence of six consecutive games away from home.
Of course, during that spell Oxford have not faced opposition anywhere near Manchester City’s calibre, even though Pep Guardiola is likely to see this tie as an opportunity to rest some of his key players ahead of the hectic festive schedule.
Oxford have already enjoyed a 4-0 home thrashing of West Ham in this competition and look likely to give a good account of themselves, but ultimately City have been EFL Cup experts in recent years and should stay on course to lift this trophy for a third straight season.
