Norwich City vs Newcastle United Match Preview
Steve Bruce takes his Newcastle side to the club where he made his name as a player aiming to defy some very ominous stats and trends for this fixture.
Newcastle’s prospects in Norfolk are not promising when you look at the section immediately above this one and besides a poor record at this venue, they have fired seven straight goalscoring blanks on their initial road trip of each league campaign since 2011-12.
The Magpies also failed to find the net when losing narrowly at home to Arsenal last weekend, but it was not a bad display and there was something to build on for Bruce in his first competitive game in charge of his hometown club.
He now heads to Carrow Road, where he spent three successful years as a defender before joining Manchester United for a fee of £800,000 in 1987 and was subsequently voted into the Norwich City Hall of Fame.
Only the more vintage Canaries fans will remember Bruce donning the yellow and green, but they may be wishing for a centre-half of his ilk if the newly-promoted club continue to ship goals as frequently as the four they conceded in the first half of their opener at Liverpool.
In fairness, Daniel Farke’s side improved after the break and ‘won’ the second period with a Teemu Pukki goal. Staying solid at the back could be uppermost in both teams’ thoughts here and we can see this game finishing as a low-scoring draw.
