Nigeria vs South Africa Match Preview
South Africa caused a major upset when they knocked hosts and favourites Egypt out of the Africa Cup of Nations at the weekend, but we are backing their run to end against Nigeria.
Egypt produced a thoroughly lacklustre display in the round of 16, losing 1-0 to a late goal from striker Thembinkosi Lorch – his first for South Africa – and coach Javier Aguirre paid the price immediately by losing his job.
It prevented a humdinger of a quarter-final against Nigeria, but the Super Eagles will not be complaining because the bottom half of the draw is tough enough anyway as the winner of this tie will face a clash with either Algeria, the Ivory Coast or Mali.
Nigeria ended the reign of holders Cameroon when current and former Premier League duo Alex Iwobi and Odion Ighalo earned them a 3-2 success, overcoming a disappointing loss to surprise package Madagascar that completed their group campaign.
When you look at the respective squads of these nations, it really should be no contest because South Africa have 17 players plying their trade in their own country whereas Nigeria’s are scattered across the top leagues in Europe.
Champions of their continent as recently as 2013, it is perhaps a shade premature to tip Nigeria as likely winners again – but they have every chance of going all the way and are expected to be too good for South Africa.
