Newcastle United vs Wolves Match Preview
Newcastle United have travelled to China for the Premier League Asia Trophy without a manager as their bid to lure Steve Bruce from Sheffield Wednesday was, at the time of writing, rumbling on.
As of Monday afternoon, the latest was that Bruce, who was eager to take charge at his hometown club, had reportedly resigned from Sheffield Wednesday but no compensation fee for he and his assistants, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, had been agreed by the clubs.
It meant Neil Redfearn was at the Magpies helm for this biennial four-cornered tournament, which is being held in China for the second time as Newcastle try to go one better than in their only previous appearance, when runners-up to Chelsea in the inaugural edition of 2003.
Redfearn is, however, desperately short of proven goalscorers. Since the end of last season, forwards Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez and Joselu have all left the club, leaving Dwight Gayle, who was on loan at West Brom in 2018-19, and Yoshinori Muto as the only established strikers in the squad.
Transfer activity has also been surprisingly quiet at Wolves, with the confirmation that loan stars Raul Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker have signed permanently being the only positive news so far.
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo will be keen to boost his ranks for the forthcoming Europa League qualifiers, but even with the group he has with him in Nanjing his side are fancied to edge out a Newcastle side experiencing a turbulent summer after Rafael Benitez’s departure.
