Newcastle United vs West Ham United Match Preview
Steve Bruce’s whirlwind week reaches a crescendo as he takes charge of his hometown club Newcastle United for the first time in the Premier League Asia Trophy third place play-off.
The 58-year-old Geordie was still the manager of Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday when he presided over their 3-1 friendly-match win at Lincoln, but resigned on Monday and by Wednesday he was flying out to China having been appointed as the new Magpies boss.
Newcastle supporters generally appear unhappy at the latest big decision made by the club’s unpopular owner Mike Ashley, while Sheffield Wednesday are also assessing their legal options, so it has not exactly been a dream start for Bruce in a job he clearly strongly desired.
He has inherited a squad short of strikers, with only Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto available to face West Ham, although reports are strongly linking Newcastle with a £36million move for Brazilian forward Joelinton from German club Hoffenheim.
Both Newcastle and West Ham were heavily beaten in the semi-finals of this four-cornered tournament, losing 4-0 to Wolves and 4-1 to Manchester City respectively – the Hammers even though they took the lead through a Mark Noble penalty.
With a big task on his hands to convince the Toon Army he can build on the work done by his predecessor Rafael Benitez, Bruce will be keen to make a flying start and there may just be a touch of value in backing Newcastle to edge out Manuel Pellegrini’s side here.
