Newcastle United vs Southampton Match Preview
Two teams trying to claw their way out of relegation danger meet on Tyneside, where Southampton are backed to maintain their decent away form by claiming a point.
Both clubs have had a good week, with Newcastle holding Manchester City to a draw at St James’ Park before rewarding our 4/1 bet on them to win at Sheffield United by pulling off an excellent 2-0 triumph.
Jonjo Shelvey has been wearing the captain’s armband to good effect of late with a goal in each of the last two games, but there remains a doubt over who will score for the Magpies on a regular basis with strikers Joelinton and Andy Carroll showing no signs of being prolific.
In contrast, Danny Ings is certainly delivering the goods for Southampton. The former Burnley and Liverpool man has put his injury woes behind him to score nine goals in his last 10 matches and has certainly become the Saints’ talisman.
Southampton have registered back-to-back 2-1 home wins over Watford and Norwich, while their away results are among the best in the bottom half of the Premier League table and last time they hit the road they drew 2-2 at Arsenal.
It’s a little early to suggest neither of these sides will be involved in the relegation dogfight, but they are both on a high at present and fancied to keep their respective points totals ticking over by sharing the spoils on Sunday.
