Newcastle United vs Manchester City Match Preview
Manchester City have won only one of their last four matches and were beaten at Newcastle in January, but are backed to make it business as usual on Saturday lunchtime.
The current spell may be one of those short blips City have from time to time or the start of something more sinister. We are opting for the former at this stage and expect them to bounce back – especially with the Manchester derby just around the corner to sharpen their focus.
However, having been left a defender light by Vincent Kompany’s departure in the summer, and subsequent injuries to members of the back line, manager Pep Guardiola could be concerned by a run of what is now six games without a clean sheet.
In addition, he is without striker Sergio Aguero for the next week or two, although Gabriel Jesus is a more than able deputy and it is not as though City are short of goalscorers in midfield and the creative positions.
What Newcastle have going for them, meanwhile, is a tendency to raise their game for the bigger matches and also a very solid defensive record at their Tyneside home.
However, the Magpies struggle to score goals and on the evidence of Monday’s toothless 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa they will find it hard to test the mettle of a City side that should have more than enough quality to break them down.
