Manchester City have a great opportunity to put pressure on Liverpool in the Premier League title race by delivering the first blow in this round of midweek fixtures.

The reigning champions can close to within one point of the table-topping Reds by winning at Newcastle before the leaders host Leicester the following evening.

City have not lost to Newcastle in the league since 2005 and on current form there is nothing to suggest that fact is likely to change on Tuesday.

Since losing at Leicester on Boxing Day, Pep Guardiola’s side have won eight matches in a row by a 33-2 aggregate and kept a clean sheet in the last six of them.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have tasted victory within 90 minutes only once in their latest nine attempts and slumped out of the FA Cup after a 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park on Saturday with a comparatively stronger starting team than the one fielded by their opponents Watford.
