LA Galaxy’s ordinary away form could be their downfall when they travel to the Big Apple aiming to edge ahead of their local rivals at the top of the MLS standings.

The City of Angels is threatening to take control of North America’s top soccer competition this season because Los Angeles FC and the Galaxy have raced clear in the overall table, building a four-point gap to third-placed Seattle Sounders.

With LAFC in action later on Saturday, Galaxy can take over at the summit temporarily at least if they beat New York Red Bulls – but they will need to produce one of their better performances on the road to do so.

Galaxy’s home record this term is perfect, six wins out of six including last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake in which Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored the decisive goal with already his eighth of the season, got involved in an unseemly spat with Nedum Onuoha.

But on their travels, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s team have failed to score against both Dallas and Minnesota, with a win, a draw and a defeat in their three away days so far.

The Red Bulls, meanwhile, have a solid record on their own pitch (see stats above) and with coach Chris Armas having dampened claims that he is to be replaced by Thierry Henry with last week’s success against Cincinnati, they are taken to grind out another narrow victory.
