Motherwell vs Hearts Match Preview
Motherwell’s previously solid defence crumbled against Celtic at the weekend and they could be set for more disappointment in the Scottish League Cup when they host Hearts.
Well had kept five consecutive clean sheets in this competition and the Premiership, in which they opened with a 0-0 draw at Livingston, when Celtic visited Fir Park on Saturday. But the rearguard was well and truly breached in a 5-2 defeat to the treble Treble winners.
In fairness to Stephen Robinson’s side, that was only one setback and it was against the best team in their country. Plus, it has to be said that Hearts have been less than convincing so far this term with only two wins out of four in the League Cup group stage and one Premiership point collected from a possible six.
However, as they showed last season, Hearts will be a significantly better team when they get Steven Naismith back to full fitness and the Scotland striker is gradually getting there, having opened his goalscoring account for the campaign against Aberdeen before coming off early in the 0-0 draw with Ross County as a precaution with a slight hamstring tweak.
Naismith’s presence at Fir Park would be a worry for the Motherwell defence, while Hearts have also just bolstered their ranks with the signing of promising goalkeeper Joel Pereira on loan from Manchester United.
This is a close tie to call and it may well take the second half to separate these sides, but the Jam Tarts certainly have the classier of the two squads and are backed to edge through to the last eight.
