Morocco vs Argentina Match Preview

Morocco put up a brave fight at this summer’s World Cup but ultimately didn’t do enough to secure qualification through to the Round of 16. A last gasp defeat to Iran on the second day of the tournament put them on the wrong path and that was followed up with a narrow defeat to Portugal and a dramatic draw with Spain in their final game to ensure they would be heading home at the first hurdle despite playing above expectations against two of Europe’s biggest sides.

There was no time for rest for the Atlas Lions as they entered African Cup of Nations qualifying directly after the World Cup and their performances have been solid in that competition so far as they’ve picked up three wins and two draws including an impressive 2-0 home victory over Cameroon. Argentina will have been disappointed by their showing at this summer’s World Cup despite being knocked out by the eventual winners in France. With the history they have and the quality that their squad possesses, the South Americans went into the tournament among the favourites but instead picked up just four points from a group consisting of Croatia, Nigeria and Iceland and were beaten 4-3 by les Bleus in the Round of 16 after scraping through.

Form since the World Cup hasn’t been much better either. Lionel Scaloni has taken the job from the unpopular Jorge Sampaoli who oversaw that poor showing in Russia but the former Deportivo La Coruna man has struggled for consistency so far with his side winning four of their seven friendlies since the World Cup but going down in defeat to Brazil and more recently Venezuela. Can they earn a morale-boosting victory here at 5/4 with William Hill?

We’re anticipating a low-scoring match here. Argentina may have a myriad of attacking options but Scaloni seems unable to find the best balance in the squad and under 2.5 goals have been scored in three of their last four friendly fixtures.
