Monaco vs Nimes Match Preview
It’s hard to see how the season could have begun any worse for Monaco, who hosted the opening game of the Ligue 1 campaign and were hammered by Lyon. They then faced perennial strugglers Metz last weekend, and lost by an identical 3-0 scoreline. To add insult to injury, they had defender Ruben Aguilar sent off; both he and Cesc Fabregas, red-carded at Lyon, will miss this game.
Les Monegasques will be looking with increased urgency in the direction of Wissam Ben Yedder, who arrived just over a week ago from Sevilla and went goalless last week. The French international striker may also have support from Leicester’s Islam Slimani, signed on loan until the end of the season. Along with Falcao, those two make up a decent stable of strikers.
For Nimes, who finished 9th in last season’s Ligue 1, the first two weeks of the season have scarcely been any better. A tough opening fixture against Paris SG ended in an expected defeat (3-0), before last week’s home loss to Patrick Vieira’s Nice. The visitors picked up all three points (1-2) despite playing for 40 minutes with just ten men.
Worse yet for Nimes was what happened deep into time added on, when Pedro Martinez was sent off for a second yellow card. His defensive partner, Tony Briancon, shared his opinions on the decision with the referee, and was also shown the red card, meaning Nimes come into this game without either of their first-choice central defensive partnership.
Given that Monaco have shown significant defensive weakness, you wouldn’t rely on them to keep a clean sheet here, but they’ll never have a better chance to end their own dry spell in the opposition box. At Dafabet, you’ll get odds of ⅚ on Both Teams To Score – and even though they have a single goal between them so far this season, that’s an attractive proposition.
Part of the reason that we can expect goals at both ends is the presence of Ben Yedder in the Monaco line-up. His 18 La Liga goals last season show his worth in attack, and he’s priced by Coral at 7/2 to get the game’s opening goal. With Falcao not having played this season and believed to be heading to Galatasaray, “Benyebut” is well-priced to open the scoring.
