Minnesota United vs LA Galaxy Match Preview
Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s time in MLS may be coming to an end – but he will certainly not want it to finish with a play-off defeat against Minnesota United.
The charismatic Swede is being linked with a move back to Europe having recently turned 38 and would probably view it as a resounding failure if he returned to his home continent without having conquered America in two years there.
Last season, and 2017 for that matter before Zlatan’s arrival, LA Galaxy did not qualify for the play-offs. But now they have, and must get past Minnesota in order to secure a Western Conference semi-final against regular-season winners Los Angeles FC – and their star man Carlos Vela, with whom Ibrahimovic has had a spat over who is the more effective player.
Ibrahimovic has scored 30 goals this term, four behind Vela, so he has still ‘got it’. And he may just be the man to fire the Galaxy through here, even though Minnesota have a terrific home record this season.
Managed by former Everton and Stoke City forward Adrian Heath, Minnesota United have exceeded expectations in only their third year in MLS and lost just once in Saint Paul, which was to a late winner by Philadelphia Union.
It will need a Galaxy side whose results have been patchy to be on top form here, but they are capable of scoring lots of goals through Ibrahimovic and Cristian Pavon…and we think a certain Scandinavian will be determined to keep his MLS Cup ambitions alive.
