Middlesbrough vs Wigan Athletic Match Preview
Two clubs urgently in need of a boost meet on Teesside and especially from Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate’s perspective, this has taken on the status of a must-win game.
The former England defender was appointed as replacement for Tony Pulis this summer in his first senior managerial role and has yet to taste success in four matches, including an embarrassing Carabao Cup exit to League Two club Crewe at home last week.
Boro have lost two of their three Championship games 1-0 to sit at the foot of the early table and although Woodgate was referring to “fine margins” and “early days” after Saturday’s defeat at Blackburn, he will be aware that patience is not limitless at a club such as this.
Wigan are also having an early bad patch with three defeats to nil since they began with a fine 3-2 victory at home to Cardiff, and they will also be looking to turn things around quickly so they can enter the September international break feeling better about themselves.
In fairness, on Saturday at home to promotion favourites Leeds, the Latics had to play for 70 minutes with 10 men and the red card for Joe Williams changed the game, while new target man Kieffer Moore is only just finding his feet since his move from Barnsley.
Essentially, this is not a match in which you can really trust either team to win until they show they are on an upward curve, especially Middlesbrough at odds-on, and the draw is our idea of the best bet.
