Two automatic promotion hopefuls in the Championship go head-to-head on Teesside with Leeds United facing a critical phase of their season after being knocked off the top of the table.

The Whites were deposed by Norwich in a 3-1 home defeat last weekend which was their fourth loss in six league games, and they could be down to third place by the time this game kicks off if Sheffield United win on Friday night.

It was always going to be a roller-coaster ride with mercurial Marcelo Bielsa in charge at Elland Road and the response to the recent lapse will be fascinating, especially with the ‘spygate’ saga still fresh in the memory.

It will be difficult for Leeds to resume winning ways at Middlesbrough who, under Tony Pulis, are unsurprisingly the most solid team defensively in the English second tier this term.

Although Boro have some ground to make up, they are just the sort of side you can see launching a challenge from their current fifth position for the top two automatic promotion spots during the final third of the campaign.
