Mexico vs Venezuela Match Preview
Venezuela continued this season’s good form with a creditable draw against Ecuador on Saturday, but could find CONCACAF Gold Cup favourites Mexico too hot to handle.
Now undefeated in their last six official fixtures, including a 3-1 victory over a Lionel Messi-led Argentina side, Venezuela are making sure they are not undercooked for the forthcoming Copa America in which they face Peru, Bolivia and hosts Brazil during the group stage.
Due to the political unrest in their own country, Rafael Dudamel’s side are playing all three of their warm-up games on American soil and will have been disappointed to concede a stoppage-time equaliser to Ecuador in Miami after Yangel Herrera had put them ahead.
After this game in Atlanta, Venezuela move on to Cincinnati to face the United States on Sunday, so within four days they are playing the first and second favourites respectively for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Mexico will be trying to recapture that trophy under manager Gerardo Martino, for whom this will be a happy return to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium after guiding Atlanta United to the MLS title last year.
The Argentine has made a promising start to his reign with El Tri, guiding them to high-scoring wins against Chile and Paraguay in his first two matches in charge, and something similar could be in store here before Mexico move on to Texas to take on Ecuador.
