Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview
Jose Mourinho returns to Manchester United as an opposition manager just under a year after his sacking, with Tottenham having become great entertainers since he took charge.
The Special One, most readily associated with 2-0 wins during his time at Chelsea and ‘parking the bus’ against the top teams when United boss, has guided Spurs to three wins out of three so far, all by either 3-2 or 4-2 scorelines.
With the Red Devils’ recent results also containing plenty of goals (see stats above) it could be an exciting contest at Old Trafford, where Mourinho received a favourable reception from the fans earlier this season when working as a TV pundit and may well get the same again.
But equally, it could be a cagey affair if Mourinho and his successor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, decide their teams have been too suspect defensively of late – and certainly the Norwegian will be disappointed to have conceded a total of five goals in the last two draws with Sheffield United and Aston Villa.
The Norwegian faces a huge four days because, despite offering defiance in his pre-match press conference, he will undoubtedly be under huge pressure if United lose this game and also the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
In his favour, however, is his team’s home record against the top clubs this term. They have beaten Chelsea and Leicester to nil and should have won, rather than draw, against Liverpool and Arsenal, so United may just nick this one – and thus pretty much guarantee that Solskjaer will avoid a pre-Christmas sacking like Mourinho suffered 12 months ago.
