Manchester United vs Rochdale Predictions
Manchester United have endured a stuttering start to the new campaign, their first full one under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After racing out of the blocks with a 4-0 win over Chelsea on the opening weekend, the Red Devils have since slipped to defeats against Crystal Palace and West Ham United and been held to draws by Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton, slipping down to eighth in the Premier League table.
A win in the Europa League over Astana got the continental campaign off to a better start last week but confidence will have been knocked by that defeat to the Hammers at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With Solskjaer understanding the importance of silverware to the club, you can expect United to take this tournament seriously starting with a win over Rochdale here at odds of 1/10 with Unibet.
League One Rochdale have another glamorous cup tie to enjoy here following some excellent results in the FA Cup in recent years. The Dale have made headlines with wins over the likes of Nottingham Forest and Leeds United in recent seasons and they also managed to hold Premier League high-fliers Tottenham Hotspur to a draw in that competition two seasons ago, although perhaps this trip to nearby Old Trafford is the most glamorous tie of the lot.
Brian Barry-Murphy’s men have battled for consistency in League Two so far this season and as such, are currently struggling in the bottom half of the table. With just two wins to their name from nine EFL Cup games, the Dale have saved their better performances for this competition so far where they have beaten Bolton Wanderers and Carlisle United to set this tie up – but a win here is highly unlikely at odds of 33/1 with Coral.
We expect the Red Devils to breeze past lowly Rochdale here and they should do so with a clean sheet – something they have managed in three of their four home games in all competitions so far this season. The Dale have failed to score in two of their last four games, scoring only once in the other two, so we can see them struggling to great chances against superior opposition here. The home win to nil is priced at 7/10 with William Hill.
Mason Greenwood enjoyed his first European start last week, scoring the only goal in Manchester United’s victory over Astana in the Europa League. The 17 year old will be expecting to start again in this one and we’re expecting him to showcase his clinical finishing ability by opening the scoring again at odds of 4/1 with Bet365.
