Manchester United vs Newcastle United Match Preview
Newcastle find themselves level on points with Manchester United in the Premier League table – and are entitled to fancy their chances of climbing above them on Boxing Day.
The Magpies have won three of their last four matches to move into the top half of the standings and from being among the relegation favourites at the start of the season, they can now look with fairly realistic ambition towards the European places.
Steve Bruce is doing a terrific job on Tyneside and delivering the perfect answer to those in his native North East that condemned his appointment as manager in the summer – which would have had at least something to do with his status as a former Sunderland boss!
Manchester United were beaten at St James’ Park in early October by a goal from teenage midfielder Matty Longstaff, who has made only two subsequent appearances and been warming the bench alongside his brother Sean for the most part.
The Red Devils are still struggling to produce any real consistency although there is a pattern emerging from their results – they are much better counter-attacking against the top teams and struggle in comparison when dominating the ball against supposedly inferior opposition.
This match is an example of the latter scenario, despite what the table says. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are a very short price and while their home record this term suggests they will get the job done, they may have to settle for a narrow victory against a stubborn Newcastle side.
