Manchester United vs Manchester City Match Preview
Exactly a calendar month after United pulled off a famous 2-1 away win against City, another Manchester derby takes place in the first leg of this Carabao Cup semi-final at Old Trafford.
For United, that Etihad Stadium victory was their best result of the season, albeit there was a sting in the tail – it actually contributed towards their supporters’ worst scenario imaginable, that of Liverpool winning the Premier League title.
Thus, City are 14 points off the pace in the defence of their crown but, like their local rivals, they still have three more trophies they can realistically target – the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and a piece of continental silverware, in their case the Champions League rather than the Europa League.
Being at home first in this tie may just suit United. They know they can win at the Etihad with their counter-attacking game and so if they can be no more than one goal down after Tuesday’s opening 90 minutes, they will feel they still have a chance of reaching Wembley.
Plus, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have a strong record at Old Trafford this term, beaten there only once in 15 matches including when they became the only team to have taken a Premier League point against Liverpool.
We envisage this game being closely-fought and neither team taking a sizeable advantage to the Etihad three weeks from now. Any of the three Match Result outcomes are distinctly possible but despite last month’s result, City are still the better of these teams and are backed to show that by edging a narrow victory.
