Manchester United go into this derby in the dreadful knowledge that if they can reverse their poor form and beat City, it could hand the Premier League title to their fiercest rivals Liverpool.

The last thing United fans want is to see Liverpool end their 29-year wait to become English champions again – they would much rather watch City lift the Premier League trophy for a fourth time in eight seasons, even if it also leads to them completing the domestic treble.

City need to win this game in hand at Old Trafford to return to the top of the table, after which neither they nor Liverpool face another rival from the ‘big six’ – so this really could be the fixture that decides the title.

For United, the outcome of this contest would not matter quite so much if they did not have their own issues to sort out. They also need to win if they are to retain a realistic chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, with that prospect diminishing due to their own poor form culminating in a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Everton on Sunday.

The Red Devils have been beaten in six of their last eight games, four of them to nil, and it is a mystery how a team that improved so markedly when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over can suddenly lose the plot so abjectly, visibly lacking the desire they showed through the winter.

United cannot afford to fold as tamely as they did against Barcelona and Everton within the previous seven days and, strange as it may seem, if they fight like tigers, cause problems for City and yet lose narrowly, their supporters would probably accept it in the circumstances.
