Manchester United vs Liverpool Match Preview
Liverpool’s recent record at Old Trafford is weak (see stats above ) – but not for decades have they visited the home of their fiercest rivals with a stronger chance of victory.
The fortunes of these North West giants have diverged so markedly this season that Liverpool are well odds-on for a win that would put them just 90 minutes of football, at home to Tottenham, away from setting a new Premier League record of 19 consecutive triumphs.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have won eight out of eight this term and will surely never get a better opportunity to end their 30-year wait to become English champions again – a period during which they have seen their bitter foes from along the M62 lift the trophy on 13 occasions.
United, meanwhile, began the weekend just 33/1 in places to be relegated. They have failed to win any of their last five league and cup matches, including at home to Rochdale, or score more than one goal in a game since the opening weekend of the campaign.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is clinging to his, or the club’s, long-term plan in order to save his job, because results are simply not cutting the mustard. Ironically, his predecessor, Jose Mourinho, was sacked last December after a 3-1 defeat away to Liverpool.
Just to compound the Red Devils’ problems, they are set to be without goalkeeper David De Gea and key midfielder Paul Pogba due to injury, although the prospects for Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw are reported to be better.
In contrast, Liverpool are expected to have their first-choice goalkeeper Alisson available for the first time since the Premier League opener against Norwich.
So can United, who lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool in March 2014 under David Moyes, somehow shatter the leaders’ perfect record? You suspect it will require an outstanding defensive performance inspired by Harry Maguire in front of deputy keeper Sergio Romero.
Solskjaer can point to that fine recent head-to-head record at Old Trafford. His team may just be galvanised by the occasion and having players back from injury, while Romero has rarely let United down. The Norwegian may just escape with a draw – and he would surely accept that right now.
