Manchester United vs Chelsea Match Preview
Frank Lampard takes his Chelsea team to Old Trafford hoping to end up celebrating like he did on his only previous visit to this stadium in charge of a club.
The former England midfielder has been a manager for just one season, but he still got the chance to take on Manchester United on their own pitch with his youthful Derby County side – and they thoroughly deserved their Carabao Cup success last September in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw having conceded a last-gasp equaliser.
After getting the better of his old boss Jose Mourinho on that occasion, Lampard will not fear locking horns with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who, similar to himself, is a legend of his club that has taken the managerial hotseat somewhat earlier than would have been expected.
Neither of these clubs, who have won the Premier League title 18 times out of 27 between them, is in the greatest shape to launch a challenge for glory this term and despite bolstering their leaky defence with the signings of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, United look weaker in midfield and attack after the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera.
Chelsea, of course, have sold Eden Hazard and were under a transfer ban this summer, so they will hope Christian Pulisic can shine after making his move from Borussia Dortmund which was completed in January.
Matches between these clubs are generally tight, low-scoring affairs and we see this one being no different – although United will hope the sudden exit of David Luiz from Chelsea on transfer deadline day has disrupted the Blues’ preparations.
