Manchester United vs Chelsea Match Preview
Manchester United and Chelsea are both involved in a battle for a top four finish in the closing stages of this season and thus, a spot in next year’s Champions League. With just three games remaining, Spurs occupy 3rd spot with a six point gap separating them from the Red Devils in sixth and the Blues are currently sitting in the fourth and final qualification spot on 67 points, one more than Arsenal and three more than United.
After starting life under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his interim period in magnificent form, the Red Devils come into this match in a far worse state having lost seven of their last nine games in all competitions including both legs of their Champions League quarter final with Barcelona and a pivotal derby against Manchester City in midweek. Can they earn a win to spark a turnaround in their fortunes here at 13/8 with William Hill.
Chelsea’s first season under Maurizio Sarri has had some real peaks and troughs. After starting the campaign with ten straight wins in all competitions, the Blues looked like potential title challengers alongside Liverpool and Manchester City before falling away in the middle of the season, struggling for consistency and looking set to miss out on the top four after crashing out of the FA Cup and losing in the EFL Cup final to the Citizens.
Both sides need the points in what is a tight race for the top four. For United, three points is the only option if they’re to have any real chance of breaking into the Champions League qualification spots and you can back them to put that poor spell of form to bed and earn a huge victory here at 13/8 with William Hill. If you fancy the visitors to pick up the points instead, the Blues are available at 17/10 with Bet365.
We’re anticipating a low-scoring affair here. Chelsea may have been involved in some high-scoring games of late but they appear to have frozen away from home against the bigger sides in the division, losing at Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur this term. United meanwhile have failed to score in four of their last five games and nine of the last 12 meetings between these two sides have seen less than three goals scored so we’re backing under 2.5 goals again here at evens with Bet365.
It’s tough to call a winner in this fixture. United have the home advantage but they don’t look the same team since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was awarded the job on a permanent basis last month and have won only one of their last five games. Chelsea were held to a draw with Burnley on Monday night though and are not at their best at the moment either so we can’t make a case for them winning here, so we’re backing the draw at 12/5 with PaddyPower.
