Manchester City vs Wolves Match Preview
After winning four domestic trophies last season, Manchester City aim to put yet another in their bulging display cabinet – but it may not be a cakewalk against Wolves in Shanghai.
In order, the FA Community Shield, Carabao Cup, Premier League and FA Cup found their way to the Etihad Stadium last term as City swept aside all-comers – although ironically it was another English club, Tottenham, who thwarted them in the Champions League!
No doubt Pep Guardiola’s team will think they can win the lot in 2019-20 and there would be no better way to start than by the familiar feeling of hoisting another piece of silverware in the shape of the Premier League Asia Trophy, a four-cornered competition held every two years and this time in China.
City’s long-haul flight was delayed 48 hours due to administrative issues, which meant they arrived only the day before their semi-final against West Ham. After conceding the opening goal to a penalty, the English champions shrugged off any jet-lag by hitting back to win 4-1 thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling (two), David Silva and Lukas Nmecha.
Wolves were arguably just as impressive if not more so, as they never gave Newcastle a look-in by trouncing them 4-0 with Diogo Jota netting twice, Morgan Gibbs-White also on the scoresheet and the other being an own goal.
Both teams will obviously be fitter for those outings and although it is usually folly to oppose City, there may just be some value this time in backing Wolves to hold them at least over 90 minutes considering Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have had the more straightforward build-up.
