Manchester City vs West Ham United Match Preview
With the first leg of a potential Quadruple in the bag, Manchester City can turn attention towards boosting their chances of retaining the other trophy they are defending this season.
A fourth League Cup success in six years was achieved at Wembley on Sunday in a final overshadowed by the Maurizio Sarri substitution controversy, but a much more routine evening is expected on home soil in City’s 100th league meeting with West Ham.
A point behind Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table with the same number of games played, City need only to maintain the sparkling Etihad Stadium form they have produced since the turn of the year (see stats above) to keep the pressure on the Merseysiders.
This is, of course, a return to his old stamping ground for West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini, who guided City to a league title and two League Cups during his three years at the helm.
The Hammers are up into the top half of the table following last Friday’s 3-1 win at home to Fulham but, despite injuries to key City duo Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte, it would be a major surprise if Pellegrini and his team avoid anything other than an emphatic defeat here.
