Manchester City vs West Ham United Match Preview
Manchester City usually operate like a perfectly-oiled machine, but their preparations for the Premier League Asia Trophy have been far from perfect and that could impact upon their opening game against West Ham.
Troubled travel company Thomas Cook blamed an “administrative error” for City’s flight to China being delayed from Saturday to Monday, leaving the Premier League champions with much less time to acclimatise before facing the Hammers in this semi-final.
But such is the superiority of Pep Guardiola’s side over West Ham, who finished 46 points behind them last season, that even a City team not firing on all cylinders may well be able to prevail and book a clash with Wolves or Newcastle in the Shanghai final.
Guardiola has taken a squad of 26 players including new signings Rodri and Angelino, but 10 of them are little-tried youngsters with five senior stars either still on Africa Cup of Nations duty (Riyad Mahrez) or recovering from their Copa America exertions.
West Ham’s main signing so far this close-season has been £24million Spanish midfielder Pablo Fornals, but he is not in Manuel Pellegrini’s squad having won the European Under-21 Championship this summer. However, Javier Hernandez, strongly linked with a move away, has travelled along with Winston Reid, who missed all of last season due to a knee injury.
City’s logistical problems could mean they are not at their best here, but they are still expected to edge through in spite of that potential levelling factor.
