Manchester City vs Tottenham Match Preview
Manchester City were on for the quadruple this season until their Champions League dream was ended by none other than Tottenham Hotspur in midweek. In an emotional evening at the Etihad Stadium, Spurs headed to Manchester with a narrow lead from their win on the home leg and with the VAR on their side to cancel out an injury time winner for the hosts, managed to head through on the away goals rule after a 5-5 aggregate draw.
Attention now turns back to the Premier League where the Citizens are in a two-way scrap with Liverpool at the summit of the table for the title. As we go into this weekend’s games, where the Reds will travel to Wales to take on Cardiff City, the Citizens sit in second place, two points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side with a game in hand. Tottenham meanwhile find themselves embroiled in a fight for one of top four spots with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.
Aside from that first-leg defeat at the hands of Tottenham in the Champions League, City have been in irrepressible form of late, winning 16 of their last 17 matches. With no Champions League to play for any more, they can focus their energies entirely on this Premier League campaign where you have to imagine the next two games, against Spurs and United, will define their chances. The home win is priced at 3/10 with Bet365.
Tottenham have been a little shakier of late. Although performances have picked up at their brand new stadium, on the road they have continued to struggle and have lost six of their last seven games, including the second leg of that Champions League tie plus Premier League fixtures against the likes of Liverpool and Southampton. Without key players like Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko, an away win here seems unlikely at 9/1 with William Hill.
We can see City exacting some revenge on the Lilywhites in this game. The Blues were the better side by some distance in midweek and we can’t see them being quite so open defensively when they aren’t chasing the game, which should lead to fewer chances for the visitors on the counter attack. City know they can’t afford to slip up in this game and they should have the quality to turn the screw and head through at 4/6 with Bet365.
Raheem Sterling was the key man for City in that win on Wednesday night, even if they didn’t go through in the end. The England forward smashed in two goals (plus a further one that was disallowed for an offside), to take his seasonal tally to an impressive 24 goals in all competitions and we’re backing him to put the Spurs backline to the sword again with another two or more at odds of 9/2 with PaddyPower.
