Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk Match Preview
Manchester City will be without Sergio Aguero as they seek a victory that would clinch top spot in Champions League Group C – but on past form against Shakhtar Donetsk, that should not matter.
Aguero was injured in the Premier League title-holders’ 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday and is set to miss the next few games, leaving Gabriel Jesus to spearhead the attack instead.
However, the only time the Argentina striker has scored in five meetings with Shakhtar over the last three seasons was a late consolation goal from the penalty spot in a 2-1 away defeat in December 2017, while Jesus bagged a hat-trick in the 6-0 home rout last term.
If City win again on Tuesday they will not only secure qualification for the knockout stage but also ensure they finish top of the group table, having dropped their only points so far in a 1-1 draw away to Atalanta last time out when defender Kyle Walker ended up in goal.
Ederson, the first-choice ’keeper, got injured that night but is fit again now and will hope to thwart a Shakhtar side who would qualify themselves by pulling off a shock triumph due to their superior head-to-head record against Dinamo Zagreb.
It would be strange if Shakhtar remained behind City in the table and yet beat them to the last 16 – it would also require Dinamo Zagreb to win away to Atalanta – but that is highly unlikely to happen and instead Pep Guardiola’s side are backed to run out comfortable winners.
