Manchester City vs Leicester City Match Preview
Manchester City have the chance this weekend to confirm they are the only realistic threat to Liverpool in the Premier League title race – and are backed to grab it at Leicester’s expense.
Liverpool, 10 points clear at the top of the table, will be hoping to find out the Etihad Stadium clash has ended as a draw when they have completed their attempt to win the FIFA Club World Cup, the final of which kicks off in Qatar at the same time as this game.
Defeat for Manchester City at the Etihad against second-placed Leicester would essentially guarantee them being dethroned as champions this season, whereas if the Foxes lose they know they will get another bite of the cherry because they host Liverpool on Boxing Day.
Pep Guardiola’s side are 14 points off the pace and will remain behind Leicester whatever happens on Saturday. It means Manchester City cannot afford any more slip-ups – and they are not expected to make one here, having recovered from their derby defeat a fortnight ago with three decisive away victories in different competitions.
Leicester’s nine-match winning run has been ended by consecutive draws with Norwich and Everton, although the latter, despite squandering a 2-0 half-time lead, still ended with them reaching the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a penalty shootout.
They won at the Etihad in their 2015-16 title-winning campaign, but this time Leicester are fancied to lose to a Manchester City side who are very much drinking in the ‘last chance saloon’ as far as catching Liverpool is concerned.
