Manchester City vs Everton Match Preview
Everton’s revival since the departure of Marco Silva will be given a big test when they begin 2020 with a trip to face north west rivals Manchester City.
It is clear now that Silva was the problem causing the Toffees to be lingering near the Premier League relegation zone. Under his caretaker replacement Duncan Ferguson, and now the permanent successor Carlo Ancelotti, they have remained unbeaten – and won both matches since the highly successful Italian took charge.
Already up into the top half of the table, it will be fascinating to see just how far Ancelotti can take Everton – for whom the timing of his exit from Napoli could not have worked out better, given he felt ready to walk straight into another job.
The Merseysiders’ recent improvement could feasibly be a problem here for City, who are having to face up to losing their Premier League title after dropping so many points compared to runaway leaders Liverpool, most recently in Friday’s agonising 3-2 defeat at Wolves.
But at least the reigning champions bounced back quickly less than 48 hours later with a 2-0 home victory over Sheffield United and they will have goalkeeper Ederson back between the sticks here after he was suspended for that game having been sent off at Molineux.
Despite being so far off the title pace, City cannot allow themselves to give up this early and they are expected to provide the revitalised Everton team with something of a reality check by recording a comfortable win.
