Man City vs Real Madrid Match Preview

Los Blancos were subject to a Pep Guardiola masterclass when they faced Manchester City on home turf in the first leg of the Champions League knockout tie. Indeed, the Catalan boss had his team tactics, starting XI and formation aligned, nullifying Madrid’s attacking fullbacks and limiting them to transitional possessional play.

Before the game, the choice to leave the likes of Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and David Silva on the bench had a few eyebrows raised. Yet, with Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne playing as false nines, the Citizens were able to create attacking chances whilst cutting off the hosts midfield channel, leaving Karim Benzema as an isolated figure up front.

Erring to the side of caution seemed to pay off for City, with the defensive line up keeping Madrid’s speedy Vinicius Junior at bay on either flank of the pitch. The real sucker-punch for Zinedine Zidane’s men, however, was to come through the introduction of Sterling and Gabriel Jesus who were amidst the action for both of City’s goals.

In this March’s second leg at the City Ground, it wouldn’t be all too surprising to see a similar tactic used by the hosts. Cutting off the supply to the Madrid attackers while providing thrust and power on the counterattack would be the perfect way to kill the tie and ensure safe passage into the next round of the tournament.

Given that Madrid will be without suspended captain Ramos – a club stalwart – and Eden Hazard who remains on the injury table, there is every chance of City eliminating the 13-time champions with another one of Pep’s carefully thought-out masterplans.
